Commemorating the 1900th anniverary of Hadrian's Wall.
Britain was at the edge of the Roman Empire in the early 2nd century. Rome had invaded and colonialised England and much of Wales in a campaign starting in AD 43, but had never succeeded in gaining a foothold north, always held back by Pict and Caledonian tribes in what we now call Scotland. Emperor Hadrian visited Britain in AD 122 and this is when construction started. Hadrian is responsible for the building of the wall.
Part of a five coin set which includes the following designs:
- Emperor Hadrian
- General Julius Agricola
- Pict Warrior
- Roman Soldier
- Severus Septimus
*This coin is from Guernsey and has not entered general circulation in the UK*
